James Dean – Giant
Filmed in Texas and released in 1956, Giant was the last of three films James Dean starred in and earned him his second Oscar nomination for his performance – he was just 24. He promised director George Stevens that he wouldn’t drive his new car, the Porsche 550 Spyder (nicknamed “Little Bastard”), for the full duration of filming. It was only after the film wrapped that he was killed in a car accident on his way to a professional race.
Often described as intense, polite, and a bit of a loner, he befriended co-star Elizabeth Taylor shortly after filming began. A Hollywood veteran by this time, she took him under her wing and introduced him to a lot of her friends. They shared a genuine chemistry both off camera and on and their mutual affection of one another is obvious throughout the film.
